Education

I will be getting my Ph.D. in physical chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill this October, and I received my Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA in 2010.

Experience

Originally from New Hampshire, I have lived and tutored in Pittsburgh, PA, San Francisco, CA, and now Chapel Hill, NC where I am working on my PhD. in physical chemistry. I have tutored and taught at both the high school and college level and really love helping students master challenging material. When I lived in California I worked as a chemistry and math teacher to students in a private, individualized school. I worked primarily with students who were either struggling and needed more help than the public schools could provide, or students who wanted to finish their courses more quickly than they could in a typical setting. I enjoyed the different challenges and came away from the experience understanding that different students require different approaches. I use this experience to tailor my tutoring style to each individual student I work with. I have always enjoyed math, but haven't always been good at it. This means I understand where a lot of the pitfalls are for students, and can help them through. I believe that anyone can succeed in chemistry, provided they have a teacher or tutor who can communicate with them in a way that makes sense, and that they can put in the time to practice their skills. I have tutored over 30 students and nearly all of them have seen a full letter grade improvement while working with me. Over the years, I have realized that most students who struggle with chemistry do so because it is presented as such an abstract concept. I make chemistry less daunting by using a number of concrete, real world examples and metaphors, and have had a lot of success with this approach. I would love to work with you in person or online, and am willing to work with groups as well. I am also available to help work with you *before* your chemistry class starts to give you a solid foundation and help you get ahead. Talk to you soon!

Hobbies

I enjoy teaching and tutoring. For me, it is incredibly rewarding to see a struggling student understand a concept for the first time. I have been doing research for the last several years. I love science, but when I am taking a break from the lab I like to read - everything from non-fiction to science fiction and fantasy to classic literature. I also enjoy pottery, programming, hiking with my dog, and the occasional silly television show.
