Education

B.A. in Historical Studies at Bard College, Graduated 2010 with a 3.2 GPA Currently enrolled in an MFA in Writing (on track to graduate in July, 2017), low-residency program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts (that means I live in Carrboro and read and write remotely for my course work).

Experience

I am a 27-year-old graduate school student with a strong desire to work with kids. I have always been a people person – from my experiences working in restaurants, to my experiences in classrooms, to coaching on the baseball field – I have an uncanny ability to connect with all different kinds of people. This ability is formed largely because of my strength in communicating in a clear and honest manner. These were skills I cultivated as a student, coach, and substitute teacher. Through coaching especially, I learned that there is no better feeling than watching people grow toward their potential under your own guidance, and that is why I am motivated to tutor students. Just writing this makes me look forward to forming productive relationships in which each party is learning something and showing growth as students in the academic world, as well as life in general. Relevant undergraduate classes: "Sociology of Education," "Origins of the American Citizen," "German Romanticism: Heine, Schiller, and Goethe," "Faith vs. Reason: A Literary Exploration," "Jamestown," "Reading Baseball As Metaphor." Relevant MFA experiences: I am currently doing course work in which critical reading and writing are paired with creative writing that is evaluated by a professor on a monthly time schedule. I am by no means rusty when it comes to evaluating work, as I workshop my peers' writing on a regular basis. I believe these are the most relevant aspects of my resume (references and further resume information available upon request): 2015: Substitute Teacher, Thetford Academy: My first teaching experiences ranged from working one-on-one with kids to improve their U.S. History research papers, to administering and correcting map quizzes for an eighth grade Global Studies class. I had good rapport with the kids, and a solid command of the classroom in my ten to fifteen days of substitute teaching this spring. 2014-2015: Middle School Baseball Coach, Thetford Academy: My time coaching seventh and eighth graders was so enjoyable that I hope to continue coaching throughout my life. I loved teaching skills, strategy, and life lessons to these boys. We had two great seasons together.

Hobbies

I grew up in Vermont, just outside of Dartmouth College. It was a lovely setting for a young boy, with unlimited access to the sprawling countryside, but with still a taste of the arts that surround an esteemed institution like Dartmouth. Both my parents are educators. My father has taught AP English and Seventh Grade English at a local high school for thirty years. My mother was a Special Educator before she became the Assistant Director of Special Ed in the local school district. She later became a certified Psychoanalyst and saw patients, both young and old, but maintained a part time job as an administrator. They each impressed upon me the importance of education in their own ways, pushing me to care about my work, and pushing me to explore as many subjects as possible. That is partially how I ended up at a liberal arts school like Bard College: I wanted to enroll in a wide array of classes before I thought about the career path I would eventually pursue. After five years of writing on my own after graduating - and working in restaurants to earn an income - I gravitated toward the MFA program that I am currently enrolled in and I couldn't be happier about it. Outside of school, I love playing, watching, thinking about and talking about sports. I love reading, writing, and listening to podcasts (some podcasts that I would recommend: "This American Life," "Radiolab," "Snap Judgement," "Planet Money," "Serial," "Note To Self," "New Yorker: Fiction.") I swim, I jog, I write long emails to old friends, and I hope to be published by the time I graduate in 2017, so I write creative nonfiction and fiction when I have the time. I look forward to beginning my life as a tutor, and hopefully, eventually, a teacher.
